Born in 1986, Dionysis Xenakis holds a Ph.D. in the area of modelling and analysis of Mobile Data Networks from the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) Greece (2014). His doctoral work on “Localization and mobility management in heterogeneous wireless networks with Network-Assistance” has been supervised by Prof. Lazaros Merakos. Since April 2022, Dionysis serves as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Digital Industries Technologies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in the area of Management of Network and Computing Infrastructures. His Department has currently appointed him the role of creating meaningful synergies between the Industry and Academia, opening the road ahead for young students towards their employment under both sectors.
Dionysis has participated in more than 21 National and EU funded research and innovation actions (proposal writing, implementation and management), serving as a Marie Curie Fellow, Principal Investigator, Supervisor, WP leader, Technical Manager (H2020-MSCA-ETN: SEMANTIC, H2020-MSCA-RISE: OPTIMIST, GSRI-National: RE-CENT) and Project Coordinator (HORIZON-MSCA-SE: SOVEREIGN). During his career path, he has supervised more than 17 individual candidate PhD students (as main supervisor, co-supervisor or as supervisor of secondments/placements), 30 graduate (MSc theses), 25 undergraduate students (BSC theses) as well as many research interns that have been placed at NKUA, or Fogus Innovations and Services P.C.. Dionysis has published one monograph, 42 scientific publications in top-tier journals and international conferences , 4 book chapters, while he has contributed to more than 40 deliverables in Nationally and EU-funded research actions. Since October 2024, his work has been cited 900 time and his index is h-index 15 (according to Google Scholar).
Dionysis has served as a technical reviewer in almost all top-tier journals in his area (IEEE, Elsevier, Springer, etc.), as TPC Member/Chair in prestigious international conferences (IEEE ICC, Globecom, CAMAD, Meditcom, WCNC, etc.), as well as as Young Professional Panelist in major IEEE conferences (e.g., Meditcom 2021, 2022). Dionysis currently serves as an Associate Editor in IEEE Networking Letters (>June 2021) and as Selection Committee member of the IEEE Communication Society Student Competition (2021,2022,2023,2024), representing the IEEE Communication Society Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. Dionysis has also served as technical evaluator in Nationally-funded research projects (e.g., ΕΡΕΥΝΩ-ΔΗΜΙΟΥΡΓΩ-ΚΑΙΝΟΤΟΜΩ) as well as an invited lecturer and tutor in various EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions and international institutions (MSCA-ITNs: SEMANTIC, 5G STEP-FWD, SPOTLIGHT, CROSSFIRE, ICT: Acropolis, Femto Forum, etc). During his career path, Dr. Xenakis has been recipient of prestigious fellowships (e.g., Onassis Foundation for PhD/Postdoc research). Since 2022, Dionysis is Contact Point and Scientific Head of the CISCO Networking Academy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He currently coordinates the joint Industry-Academia Steering Board that has been formed in May 2023 between the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Federation of Industrial Enterprises of Central Greece.
His current research interests lie in the design, analysis and implementation of forward-thinking solutions for i) Digital Twins and AR for Industry X.0, ii) Distributed Ledger Technologies, iii) 5G / 6G mobile services and protocols, and iv) Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) technologies.
